Chapter 7

It is Important not only to Lose Weight, but to Eat Healthy Foods as Well

Losing weight is important, but it is not the only thing! To my mind, it makes no sense to follow a diet in which you lose weight but sacrifice your long-term health. And of course, you have to be able to enjoy what you are eating!

Eating any food with a low caloric density will cause you to lose weight. But there are some foods that have a relatively low caloric density that are very unhealthy. Consider for example the egg, which the low-carb folks love. Eggs have a caloric density of 1.5, so eating eggs will not cause you to gain weight. However, 2 eggs weigh only 100 grams but contain 3.2 grams of saturated fat. They won’t fill you up but will give you a large amount of saturated fat, and eating saturated fat leads to heart disease. So eggs are not a recommended food in the Golden Gate Diet, which includes only foods that both will cause you to lose weight and are healthy. (Egg whites are great though: they have a caloric density of 0.5 and contain no saturated fat.)

Saturated Fat and Cholesterol

You should limit your intake of saturated fats and cholesterol. Instead, eat unsaturated fats. A diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. This has been well proven by many studies conducted by many different doctors.53 Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States, and you can reduce the likelihood of heart disease and extend your lifespan by eating less saturated fat. By avoiding saturated fats you will also decrease the number of calories you are eating, since fat has 9 calories per gram.

Saturated fats cause heart disease. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats protect against heart disease.54 Omega-3 fatty acids are especially effective in protecting against heart disease.55, 56
Red meat is high in saturated fats. This includes beef (i.e. steak, hamburger, etc.) and pork.
