In particular, the Atkins® diet and other low carbohydrate diets (e.g. The Zone diet) are extremely popular. These diets advocate reducing carbohydrate calorie intake and support a high fat intake.15,16 Atkins claimed for example that you gain more weight from eating 1000 calories of carbohydrates than from eating 1000 calories of fat.17 To be blunt, this has never been proven, and what studies have been done suggest that this is not true.18 Moreover, the Atkins® diet has never been proven to result in long-term weight loss.19
