Chapter 13

A Psychology of Overeating

Overeating can be divided into 2 categories:
Taking in too many calories when you are hungry.
Taking in calories when you are not hungry.
What’s great about the Golden Gate Diet is that it satisfies your appetite and makes you feel not hungry without giving you a lot of calories—by telling you to eat foods with a low caloric density.
When will this not work?

1. If you eat high caloric density food.
2. If you eat when you are not hungry.

Why do people eat high caloric density food or eat when they are not hungry? These are problems of the mind.
The truth is that doctors do not fully understand why people eat foods that will cause them to gain weight or why people eat when they are not hungry. We do understand some things, though.

Self-efficacy

“Self-efficacy” means that one has the belief that one will succeed.
If you are overweight and believe you will succeed at losing weight and keeping the weight off, you have a good chance of success.280
If you are overweight and do not believe you will succeed at losing weight, you have a poor chance of success.
It’s important to know that if you “slip up” one day and eat high caloric density food, it’s not the end of the world. Don’t give up! Go back on the Golden Gate Diet. One day’s not going to kill your diet. Just remember, the fewer days you “slip up”, the faster you are going to lose weight.
